Why Colombia?

Rather than recite a list of Wikipedia facts, I’ll speak from my own personal experience.

I have been living in Costa Rica and designing and managing Costa Rica vacations since 2001. Around 2007, I fell in love with a Colombian lady and we married a couple years later. During the time I have been with her, we have made annual trips to Colombia, usually for about one month each time.

These trips have been primarily focused on the region of Antioquia, although last year I did visit the Amazon as well.

I am absolutely in love with Colombia, both the land and its people.

And, being the Costa Rica Guy that I am, that’s saying a lot.

Colombia offers a similar experience as Costa Rica, but on a much grander scale. Colombia has its mountains, some of which are snow covered, its jungles (I mentioned the Amazon, right?), its beaches (like Costa Rica, with two coasts, Pacific and Caribbean), its gorgeous and modern cities (like Medellin, Bogota and Cali), and its culture.

That last part really helps Colombia to stand apart. Colombia is an incredible mismatch of ethnicities and it is steeped in culture. From its ubiquitous music and dance, the many famous festivals held in various parts, to its far ranging indigenous groups, Colombia is all about culture.

But is it dangerous, many ask?

There was a time when the answer to that would have to be, yes. But those lawless days of Pablo Escobar and revolutionary presence in the countryside are long gone. Escobar, of course, went on to meet his maker years ago and in recent years the government has made great strides in convincing the revolutionary groups, namely the FARC, to lay down their arms.

Truth is that these days, Colombia is about as safe a Latin American destination as you can find.

And that’s welcome news because this great country has so much to offer.
