The Central Valley is the "heart" of Costa Rica. One normally associates the Central Valley with the capital city of San Jose. However, the GAM (Gran Area Metropolitana) also encompasses the cities of Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago and it is here where 1/2 of the entire population of the country resides.
Most folks desiring a Costa Rica hotel or Costa Rica vacation package are looking to stay in San Jose only for their first and/or last nights in Costa Rica. But in reality tourists should not overlook the many attractions that exist in the Central Valley area such as the Poas, Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes, Orosi valley, Toro Amarillo (and the incredible Catarata del Toro), La Paz Waterfall Gardens and many more.
The city of Cartago is the colonial capital of Costa Rica (before it was moved to San Jose) and is the home of many historic sites and the country's most famous Catholic basílica. Also, you have the city of San Jose, with a wide variety of historical sites, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and more.
