When one thinks of this Costa Rican tourist zone, what comes immediately to mind is the Arenal Volcano, the most visited attraction in the country. Some 90% of the tourists that flock to Costa Rica each year visit this spectacle of nature. And for good reason, it is one of the most active in the world, and the area is lush and green and beautiful, with waterfalls and rivers and teaming with all manner of insects, birds, monkeys and other mammals.
But the Northern Plains offer much more than the Arenal Volcano and its surroundings. It is also home to the country's largest lake, Lake Arenal. Another of Costa Rica's most visited locals is Monteverde and we include it with the Northern Plains. After all, it is only a two hour trip by van and boat to this area from La Fortuna. Monteverde is home of one of the most important and biologically diverse cloud forests on the planet. There you can see a limitless variety of flora, fauna, insects, birds and mammals. Yes the Northern Zone, together with Monteverde, is one of Costa Rica's richest in terms of natural wonders and a zone that should be a part of any Costa Rica vacation.
