Finca Valverde

This has been one of our “go-to” Monteverde  Costa Rica hotels for many years. Now they have changed the name to Ficus Lodge and they also offer the nearby Hotel Heliconia. Both hotels are what I like to call “rustic mountain lodges” and offer wood constructed cabins nestled into the surrounding Cloud Forest environment. Over the years our customers have raved about the food at this hotel and I can attest myself that it is indeed very good. The nights in Monteverde can get downright chilly and there is something about snuggling up in a warm cabin on a cold night that makes the whole experience a little more, well, “rusmantic.”

Claro de Luna

All of the above that was said to describe the aforementioned hotel can be equally applied to Claro de Luna. In fact, that is what makes Monteverde so special. You are in the mountains, in a tropical cloud forest environment and the rustic mountain lodges that are both Finca V. and Claro make the whole experience all the more enchanting. We use these two Monteverde Costa Rica hotels interchangeably. Both are excellent.

Hotel Belmar

Belmar is what I would describe as a slightly upscale version of the above two Monteverde Costa Rica hotels. I always tell customers who are Monteverde bound that all the hotels we use are going to provide the same basic rustic-mountain-lodge experience. Belmar does have the distinction of having earned a 5-leaf rating (the highest possible) under the Certificate for Sustainable Tourism program. Many of Belmar’s rooms have super views of the mountains that slope down to the Gulf of Nicoya.

El Establo

El Establo is the most upscale choice among our Monteverde Costa Rica hotels. Here is what the web site states, and I don’t have any argument with it….“nestled in the misty cloud forest of Monteverde, El Establo offers the best quality services that will make your trip an unforgettable experience: The area`s best view, heated indoor pools, spa, restaurants, café-bars, special events center, internet access, souvenirs shop, tennis court, basketball court, mini soccer court, hiking trails, canopy tour and the most charming staff ” (I especially like the objectivity inserted into that last bit). So, there you have it. If you want “upscale” in Monteverde, El Establo is your choice.
