Picture1The natural splendor of Costa Rica is displayed in many areas.  The are majestic mountains, stunningly beautiful coastline and dense tropical forests teaming with life.  However, the incredible natural phenomenon that is Costa Rica is perhaps nowhere displayed as richly as in the diversity of its birds.  I have made it a goal to learn as many of the over 800 species as possible, but it is a daunting task.  From the Scarlet Macaws that light up the sky in the Pacific South to the Resplendent Quetzals in the highlands, Costa Rica’s birds are a marvel of the world.  Let me put it in perspective, in a country the size of West Virgina (in terms of area) there are more species of birds than in the United States and Canada combined making Costa Rica the country with the greatest density of bird species of any American country.  One of my favorite ways to enjoy Costa Rica is looking for new bird species that I have never before seen.  I have had the privilege to see and photograph many species, including the spectacularly beautiful Quetzal, a bird that the ancient indigenous cultures viewed as being a god. Costa Rica is truly a land of wonders, but the birds make it even more a special place where we can get up close and personal with such a colorful and diverse array of life.  However, this unique diversity is threatened and over-development can disrupt this fragile balance. We must be vigilant not to allow this to occur to this special place. Costa Rica Bird Facts:

  • 893 species recorded (including those of Cocos Is.)
  • 17 endemic to Costa Rica
  • 19 globally threatened
  • National bird: Clay colored robin (in spanish – yigüirro)
